SUMMARY:Kandy Lopez: Vaivén
DESCRIPTION:The McEachern Art Center\, in collaboration with ACA Gallery in New York\, presents Vaivén\, featuring the work of Afro-Caribbean figurative artist Kandy Lopez. Lopez’s work explores constructed identities\, telling stories of people of color. Her current series is centered around large\, yarn-based portraits on plastic canvas. Initially designed to be walked on like a rug\, these pieces symbolize the marginalization of people of color in this country. In this exhibition\, the portraits are elevated on gallery walls and suspended — transforming these works into symbols of strength\, courage\, and beauty\, reclaiming space that often feels inaccessible.

SUMMARY:Turbidity Paintings\, Closing Reception and Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Mercer University’s Plunkett Gallery will hold a closing reception and artist talk on Thursday\, February 13 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. This will be a great opportunity to hear from the artists themselves about their innovative work that blends Art and Science. Turbidity Paintings\, an exhibition of video art and digital photography by artists Thomas Asmuth (University of West Florida) and Sara Gevurtz (Auburn University)\, opened January 13 and will close after the reception on February 13. Refreshments will be served. \nMore about the exhibition:\nTurbidity Paintings exists at the intersection of art and science\, reflecting the artists’ shared backgrounds in scientific disciplines. The series includes photographs\, video\, and turbidity readings\, offering a multi-faceted exploration of data as art. The works aim to foster dialogue between the fields of science and art by blurring their boundaries. Through experimental processes akin to the scientific method\, Asmuth and Gevurtz create projects that challenge perceptions of how art and data coexist. This exhibition promises to engage audiences with its compelling blend of creativity\, technology\, and inquiry. \nSara Gevurtz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at Auburn University. Thomas Asmuth is an Associate Professor of Digital & New Media Art and the Director of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program in the Department of Art and Design at the University of West Florida. Together\, their collaboration highlights the power of interdisciplinary approaches in addressing complex ideas. \nEvent Details: \nExhibition Dates: January 13 – February 13\nClosing Reception & Artist Talk: February 13\, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.\nLocation: Plunkett Gallery\, Mercer University
