DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Jessica C Hargarten\n(Postdoctoral Fellow NIAID\, NIH) will give a talk entitled: \n“From Bedside to Bench and Back Again: Uncovering Human Genetic Susceptibilities to Cryptococcal Meningoencephalitis” \nDr. Hargarten received her BS in Biological Sciences from the University of California\, Davis in 2009 and a PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Nebraska\, Lincoln in 2016 under the mentorship of Dr. Audrey L. Atkin. She joined the lab of Peter R. Williamson\, MD/PhD at the National Institutes of Health as a post-doctoral IRTA fellow. As a postdoc in the Translational Mycology Section in the Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Microbiology at the NIAID\, her research project focuses on understanding how rare genetic variants increase the susceptibility of previously healthy people to fungal infections\, particularly those caused by the neurotropic pathogen Cryptococcus

A number of scholarships are awarded to attendees who submit an application and are chosen by the MSSC Scholarship Committee. For the past several years\, the African American Alumni Association has supported this event and contributed funds used to award scholarships. SUMMARY:Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certificate Program
DESCRIPTION:This program is available for an in-person participation on the Atlanta Campus or online as an 8-hour\, 2-day program occurring 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. as follows: \n\nFriday\, October 9\nFriday\, October 16\n\nThe Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt certificate is typically considered to be the “entry level” belt for individuals interested in understanding the Lean Six Sigma managerial approach and developing a process improvement toolkit. No prior training or knowledge of Lean Six Sigma or statistics is required to take this course. \nCourse Outline: \nIn this 8-hour program over 2 days\, employees at all organizational levels can improve their productivity by employing basic elements of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) concepts and tools. Foundational training includes discussion of the DMAIC methodology\, appropriate forms of data collection and measurement techniques\, display of visual data (including developing scatter plots and linear models)\, lean analysis tools (including fishbone diagram\, 5 Why’s\, 5 S’s\, Gemba walks and Poka-Yokes)\, brainstorming and option selection criteria\, process improvement results assessment\, documentation\, and introduction to six sigma leadership and cultural approaches. \nWho should consider taking this course? \nThe LSS Yellow Belt certification is useful for employees at all organizational levels. Entry-level employees who want the opportunity to make impactful contributions to quality improvement projects and advance their teamwork skills will find this credential highly valued in their organizations. And executives who are aiming to foster a culture of inclusion\, efficiency\, error reduction and continuous improvement would benefit from the introduction to the LSS managerial mindset\, tools and techniques. \nLSS certificate holders often become the “go-to” individuals in their departments to determine how to improve organizational inefficiencies and decrease defects. According to the American Society for Quality\, individuals with any level of LSS certification earn an overage of $17K per year compared to those without any training. \nWhat outcomes should you expect after completing this course? \nLSS Yellow Belt Certificate holders will be able to effectively contribute to process improvement projects with the development of the following skills: \n1. Foundational understanding of the DMAIC methodology and the financial\, cultural and leadership impact LSS can have on an organization. \n2. The aptitude to recognize what types of relevant data should be used to measure different processes. \n3. The ability to collect qualitative and quantitative data and display this data using a variety of different visual tools for analysis\, team and senior leadership presentations. \n4. Employ over a dozen tools to analyze collected data and determine opportunities to create “experiments” to test for process improvements. \n5. Assess an experiment’s success and develop methods for controlling the updated process.

SUMMARY:FAA Drone Certification Test Prep Course
DESCRIPTION:Since the early days of Tesla operating a remote-controlled boat\, DRONE have been used by the military\, hobbyists\, and companies.  Only in the past few years has the FAA required that DRONE operators for non-personal use be certified as commercial pilots.  Professor Anthony Choi and John Granich determined early on that education would play a key role in the drone certification process.  It would provide a path to standardize how operators are trained.  Based on their discussions with a Putman County High School they conducted a two semester COI that not only certified 13 high school students\, but also provided them with a basic understanding of how DRONE collect and process data.  This COI is designed on the foundation of that COI. \nCourse Outline: \nThe course will be broken into 12 condensed sections each taking approximately one hour plus 3 hours of review and practice exam. \n1.Regulations\n2.Airspace Classifications\n3.Aviation Weather\n4.Small Unmanned Loading\n5.Emergency Procedures\n6.Crew Resource Management\n7.Radio Communications\n8.Determining Performance of Small Unmanned Systems\n9.Physiological Effects of Drug and Alcohol\n10.Aeronautical Decision Making & Judgement\n11.Airport Operations\n12.Maintenance & Pre-flight Inspection Procedures\n13.Review and Exam \nWho should consider taking this course? \nAny person who has a need to operate a drone for commercial purposes. Any person who will be conducting research. All participants must be 16 years old or older. \nWhat outcomes should you expect after completing this course? \nA person completing this COI will be prepared to pass the FAA certification test and obtain a commercial rating to conduct commercial drone operations in the United States.  Note: Persons who have a commercial or private pilot license should not take this course.
