SUMMARY:Book Debut\, Gordon Johnston's 'Seven Islands of the Ocmulgee'
DESCRIPTION:A reading and talk about Johnston’s book of seven interconnected river stories\, which draw on European American\, Native\, and African American traditions and relationships with the upper Ocmulgee from near Jackson to below Macon. Set from the 1810s to the present\, the stories follow characters as their inherited or adopted perspectives on the river — and their ignorance of it — are altered by their personal experience of the watershed’s danger\, power\, and life. Each story engages a specific place\, among them Pittman’s Ferry\, the Seven Islands\, Smith Shoals\, the levee in Macon\, and the Ocmulgee Mounds of the Mississippian and Muscogee peoples. \nNovelist Robert Boswell\, author of Tumbledown and The Heyday of the Insensitive Bastards\, had this to say about the collection:\n“Seven Islands of the Ocmulgee is not a quiet book of meditations on a river. Rather\, it is a deeply engaging set of intertwined stories that feature the complexity of character one associates with literary fiction while also offering surprising\, twisty plots that send the reader rocketing through the pages. This is a terrific book. I loved reading it.”

DESCRIPTION:If you could wave a magic wand and fix one problem in your community\, what would it be? \nSince 2015\, Mercer undergraduates on the Macon campus have been tackling this question via the Visionary Student Panel (VSP) program. Through VSP\, students receive coaching to support their development of a 5-minute project pitch that addresses a real-world problem at a local or regional level. Following a public pitch showcase\, participating students can apply for mini-grant funding from the Center for Engaged Learning. With continued coaching and mentorship\, funded projects will be implemented during the 2023-24 academic year. \nJoin the Center for Engaged Learning on Tuesday\, March 21st at 6pm in Willet Auditorium for the return of the VSP showcase. He divides his time between designing sanctuary gardens and sharing practices of “pausing” and “sanctuary” to help us rest\, renew and live wholeheartedly. Story is one of the most powerful forms of communication\, and Terry is a master storyteller. He tells stories of grace and inspiration as well as sharing his gift of seeing the world with new eyes. Through The Fabian Center for Musical Excellence\, the Jubilee Artists Series features leading artists performing concerts that are free or low cost to the general public\, making the best of music available to all\, while the Townsend Symposia on Music\, Philosophy and the Arts is meant to open the eyes of other professionals and scholars to new ideas\, presented especially for students\, artists and arts administrators in the community.

DESCRIPTION:This year\, Harvest Fest will be on Wednesday\, October 26th from 5:30pm to 7pm in Greek Village. Please plan to start setting up at 4:30pm ensuring that you are ready by 5:30pm. Also make sure that you clean up after the event is ended. \nHarvest Fest is an event hosted by Mercer Panhellenic for Macon elementary students and their families to visit Mercer for an afternoon of crafts and fun. Organizations are invited to set up a table with a craft or some other activity for the kids. If you are interested in participating\, register through this link by Wednesday\, October 19 at 11:59pm. Panhellenic Community Service will be in contact with you about which of your craft or activity ideas can be used during the event. To create a dynamic event\, some organizations may not host their first choice of activity. \nLastly\, because the event is so close to Halloween\, there has been a tradition of serving individually packaged candy at each table. While this is not required\, it certainly makes the event especially memorable for the kids. If you choose to provide candy\, please make sure that there is something for everyone and is allergy-friendly. Let us know if you need any assistance providing candy or an activity for your table.
