We would like to invite you to attend the 2021 Mobile Summer Institute on Scientific Teaching (MoSI) at Mercer! Please don’t let the term “scientific teaching” cause you concern. This workshop is not about teaching science; rather, it’s about how to approach your teaching using a more scientific approach. The workshop is designed to bolster institutional efforts to implement evidence-based teaching practices. Although the literature definitively documents that active learning strategies improve student success and retention as compared to other approaches, traditional lectures are still often used as a primary teaching strategy. This is likely due to a lack of formal pedagogical training for faculty combined with departmental cultures and traditions that inadvertently disincentivize reform efforts. The MoSI is designed to reduce some of these barriers, and is open to participants from any discipline.
