The first of two concerts of the Bands at The Grand Honor Band Festival hosted by Mercer University Bands. The Mercer University Wind Ensemble will perform a program inspired by hard rock and popular music styles. Dr. Monty Cole will perform Black Dog: Rhapsody for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble by Scott McAllister.

Under the direction of guest conductor Jeffrey Rowser, the Saturday afternoon concert concludes the 2nd Annual Bands at The Grand Honor Band Festival featuring top high school students who have auditioned and traveled from around the region to participate in this 3-day festival of masterclasses, performances, and community building.

Paul Watkins, conductor and cellist of the renowned Emerson String Quartet, takes the podium for an elegant evening of Elgar, Beethoven and Bartók, the latter of which the orchestra will have just performed at Carnegie Hall. It’s the next best thing to being in New York City!

We delve into masterworks by Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, Cannonball Adderley, Lester Young, and Dave Brubeck.

Dr. Nathan Gay (tuba and euphonium), accompanied by Dr. Kyung-A Yoo (piano), will perform a variety of works for euphonium and tuba. Come and enjoy the sonorous sounds of both the euphonium and tuba.

The Mercer University Wind Ensemble will break into small chamber groups to present a concert in Macon’s favorite outdoor hangout spot, The Society Garden. Expect small groups of woodwinds, brass, and percussion to perform a variety of repertoire in a casual outdoor setting.
