Join us for the first installment of BearTalks Alumni Edition with Associate Municipal Judge and Professor Angela Downes ’91.

As a student at Mercer University, Professor Downes was actively engaged in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Organization of Black Students, Pre-Law Society, and Mercer Ambassadors.

Angela Downes is a law professor at UNT Dallas College of Law where she also serves as Assistant Director of Experiential Education. She is a frequent trainer on cultural responsiveness, implicit bias, and diversity issues to attorneys, judges government entities, and school districts. Prof. Downes has also provided training, policy expertise, and technical assistance to non-profit agencies on the interpersonal violence issues of child abuse, child protection, domestic violence, human trafficking, and elder abuse. She is a recognized subject matter expert on interpersonal violence issues. Her areas of scholarship are diversity and cultural responsiveness, domestic violence, human trafficking child abuse, and elder abuse.

In 2008, Professor Downes was appointed by the Texas governor to serve on the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists and was re-appointed in 2013. The Board is the regulatory and licensing agency for psychologists in the state. She is a Texas Bar Fellow and Board Member of the Texas Mediator Credentialing Association. Professor Downes also serves as an Associate Municipal Judge for the City of Glenn Heights, Texas.
